History

In 1991, the Boone County Medical Society Alliance had a dream – a dream that became a reality in 2008. They envisioned an interactive science center focused on health, wellness and fitness in Columbia. After presenting their concept to the Columbia Chamber of Commerce health committee and receiving a strong endorsement, their dream was on its way.

During the next four years, the group formed a 15-member task force and incorporated what was then known as the Health Adventure Center as a not-for-profit corporation. Among the milestones:

1997-2002

Elected Board of Directors, consisting of local leaders in the education, health and business industries.

Worked with more than 100 people in the health/medical community on exhibits.

Secured City of Columbia support.

2003

Received 30,000 square foot historic Federal Building in downtown Columbia from the U.S. Department of Education at no cost (value $1.4 million).

2005

The museum’s name – YouZeum – as well as the YouZee logo and the tagline “It’s all about you!” are unveiled.

2008

The YouZeum celebrates its grand opening on May 1st.
